The Fulbright Chile Lithium Award, in partnership with the National Institute for Lithium and Salars (INLiSa), offers �ǿմ�ý Scholars a unique opportunity to engage in high-impact research at the forefront of critical mineral development and scientific innovation in northern Chile.

Located in Antofagasta, within one of the world’s most strategically significant lithium-producing regions, INLiSa serves as a national platform for advancing knowledge, technological development, and interdisciplinary collaboration related to salars and lithium systems.

Objectives of the Award

This award seeks to deepen scientific cooperation between Chile and the United States in areas central to lithium research and associated technological development. It aims to support scholars whose work contributes to advancing scientific understanding, improving applied processes, and strengthening collaborative research initiatives in fields connected to hydrogeological systems, resource technologies, materials science, and data-driven environmental analysis.

The program promotes sustained academic exchange by facilitating integration into active research teams and fostering joint project development with Chilean counterparts.

Program Structure

The award supports research stays of three to four months at INLiSa. During this period, Scholars will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams engaged in ongoing scientific programs, laboratory research, technological piloting, and field-based studies in northern Chile.

Scholars are expected to contribute to collaborative research activities, co-develop analytical frameworks or technological solutions, and participate in academic dialogue that advances shared research goals. The structure of the visit is designed to encourage measurable outcomes and meaningful institutional engagement within INLiSa’s research environment.

The Fulbright Chile Lithium Award is hosted by the National Institute for Lithium and Salars (INLiSa), based in Antofagasta in northern Chile.

Situated near some of the world’s most important lithium-bearing salt flats, INLiSa serves as a national research hub focused on advancing scientific knowledge, technological development, and applied innovation related to lithium and associated ecosystems.

The Institute works closely with universities, laboratories, public agencies, and international partners, providing Scholars with access to interdisciplinary expertise, regional research sites, and collaborative networks central to critical mineral research and technological advancement.

Special Award Benefits

During their grant period, Fulbright �ǿմ�ý Scholars in the Western Hemisphere (WHA) region may apply for a short-term regional travel grant for activities such as workshops, seminars, presentations, lectures, performances, exhibits, curricular advising and similar projects at institutions in eligible WHA countries. (Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados and Eastern Caribbean, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago and Uruguay).

The Regional Travel Program covers travel to and from the destination; lodging may be offered by the host institution. Scholars may only apply for this grant once they are in country on their Fulbright grant. Scholars who apply for the Flex award are ineligible for the Regional Travel Program. The Fulbright Chile Postdoctoral Partnerships Awards is a focused and structured program designed to support early-career scholars from the United States in conducting advanced research in Chile. The award is based on formal partnerships between Fulbright Chile and selected Chilean research institutions, which have identified specific strategic priority areas for hosting �ǿմ�ý postdoctoral scholars.

Under this partnership framework, postdoctoral scholars are placed at pre-identified partner institutions where their research aligns with the host institution’s defined research agenda, ensuring strong institutional integration, access to specialized infrastructure, and sustained collaboration with Chilean counterparts.

Objectives of the Award

This award seeks to:

Support high-level postdoctoral research within clearly defined institutional priority areas established by Fulbright Chile partner institutions.
Strengthen long-term scientific collaboration between �ǿմ�ý early-career researchers and leading Chilean universities, public research institutes, and centers of excellence.
Promote the development of joint research projects that contribute to Chilean and �ǿմ�ý scientific priorities and to globally relevant challenges.

Program Structure
Postdoctoral scholars will conduct independent research projects in close collaboration with researchers at the host partner institution. Depending on the nature of the project, Scholars may also collaborate with associated universities, research centers, government agencies, or industry partners connected to the host institution’s research ecosystem.

This award emphasizes a targeted and institutionally embedded model of cooperation, distinguishing it from open-placement postdoctoral awards by aligning scholar expertise with predefined institutional strengths and research agendas.

Broader Fulbright Engagement

Award Activity

The Fulbright Chile Partnerships award is a focused and structured cooperation mechanism designed to strengthen research collaboration and academic exchange between Chile and the United States. The program builds on formal partnerships between Fulbright Chile and selected Chilean universities and research centers, which have identified specific priority areas of interest for hosting �ǿմ�ý Scholars.

Under this framework, partner institutions offer a clearly defined academic and research environment, ensuring that visiting �ǿմ�ý Scholars are integrated into ongoing institutional initiatives and collaborative projects aligned with strategic priorities established by the host centers.

Objectives of the Award

This award seeks to:

Promote sustained collaboration between �ǿմ�ý and Chilean academics within clearly identified institutional focus areas.
Expand high-impact academic exchange through the placement of �ǿմ�ý Scholars at leading Chilean universities and research centers.
Provide �ǿմ�ý Scholars with structured opportunities to conduct teaching and/or research activities within actively cooperating partner institutions.

Program Structure

The award supports �ǿմ�ý scholars and scientists for research stays of three to four months at Chilean partner institutions. During their stay, Scholars will work closely with Chilean faculty and researchers to develop or advance joint research and academic projects in areas of mutual strategic interest to Chile and the United States.

This program emphasizes a targeted and results-oriented approach, offering a more focused alternative to open-placement awards by aligning Scholar expertise with predefined institutional strengths and research agendas.

The participating partner institutions offer strong research environments in fields such as astronomy, engineering and applied sciences, earth sciences and geology, mining and energy systems, marine sciences, biotechnology, health sciences, and public policy.

Proposals should demonstrate clear alignment with the established research strengths and priority areas of the selected host institution, ensuring meaningful academic collaboration and well-defined project outcomes.

Applicants are encouraged to consult the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) “Can-Do Statements” to determine if they are qualified.

USD $3,500 per month for the scholar only. There are no additional benefits for dependents.
