Orientation Information

As part of your Fulbright grant, you are required to attend a virtual Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) taking place from July 24 to 25, 2025. You will receive an email in early June with more information. If you have any questions regarding the PDO, please email FulbrightPDO.EAP@iie.org.

Additional Qualification Information

Applicants should have at least two years of teaching experience at �ǿմ�ý universities and knowledge of university management. Teaching experience may include work at a community college, but teaching assistant work does not qualify.

Experience with local, regional or international scholarly publications preferred. Prior work experience in developing countries is desirable but not required. Applicants residing in Timor-Leste are not eligible to apply.

In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities‎.

Award Activity

Teach up to 10 hours per week in undergraduate or graduate courses within area of specialization. Possible additional activities include conducting research, advising on curriculum and program development, assisting faculty and students with developing research skills, giving public talks, mentoring students, and otherwise engaging with the academic community. For teaching/research, teaching must be a minimum of 50 percent of proposed project.

Fulbright East Asia Pacific Regional Travel Program

As conditions allow, Fulbright Scholars in the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region may have the opportunity to apply for funds to support short-term (3-14 days) travel to other countries in the EAP region for activities such as lectures, workshops, graduate or faculty seminars, master classes or recitals, curricular advising, or panel presentations. EAP Regional Travel Program funding covers transportation only. Regional Travel Program activities/host sites should not be included in the initial Fulbright application. Scholars may start the process of seeking out invitations for short-term activities in other EAP countries once notified that they have been selected for a Fulbright grant but will only be able to apply for travel program funds, conditions permitting, once they have actively started their Fulbright grant in their host country. Scholars on Flex grants are not eligible for the regional travel grant.

Participants will undertake grant activities at one of the universities located in Dili, Timor-Leste.

Language Proficiency Requirements

None, English is sufficient. However, feasibility of conducting the project must be demonstrated in the project statement

Award Length and Period

The academic year runs from January to December. Grants should ordinarily commence at the beginning of the school year.

Applicants are encouraged to consult the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) “Can-Do Statements” to determine if they are qualified.

Required Proficiency

Applicants are encouraged to register qualified language evaluator, such as a language instructor or a translator, to conduct the external assessment in the application. Being a native speaker alone does not qualify an individual to conduct the assessment.

Please refer to the figures above for an estimate of total monthly Fulbright award benefits. Benefits may include a monthly base stipend, living and housing allowances, and additional one-time allowances. Benefits may vary based on a scholar's current academic rank (or professional equivalent), the city of placement, the type of award (teaching, teaching/research, or research), and the number of and duration of stay of accompanying dependents. Research-only or Professional Project grantees receive a standard stipend that is not adjusted for academic rank. In most cases, dependent benefits will not be provided to Flex grantees, or to grantees pursuing grants less than four months (or a semester) in length.

Final grant amounts will be determined prior to the start of the academic year and are subject to the availability of funds. The United States Department of State reserves the right to alter, without notice, participating countries, number of awards and allowances.

What is life like for Fulbrighters in your country?

Life as an American Fulbrighter in Timor-Leste is both rewarding and unique. Timor-Leste, a young and vibrant democracy in Southeast Asia, is still developing many of its institutions, including its universities. As a Fulbrighter, you will have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the country’s educational development. Timorese students rarely have the chance to interact with foreign educators, so your presence is highly valued. Host institutions are eager to collaborate, and you will find that your work can have a direct and lasting impact on students’ academic and professional opportunities. Living in Dili, the capital city, offers a blend of comfort and adventure. Dili is a small, coastal city with a relaxed pace of life. You will find a variety of restaurants serving both local and international cuisine, a popular shopping center, and several grocery stores that stock international products alongside fresh tropical produce. Timor-Leste is also known for its excellent coffee, which you can enjoy at local cafés. Outside of work, there are many opportunities to explore the country’s natural beauty. You can travel to the lush highlands, snorkel or dive in the pristine waters around Atauro Island, and experience the warmth and hospitality of the Timorese people. The local culture is welcoming, and you will likely be invited to community events and celebrations. As a Fulbrighter, you will also have the chance to collaborate with the �ǿմ�ý Embassy in Dili and connect with other �ǿմ�ý State Department’s exchange program participants. This network can enhance your experience and amplify the impact of your work. While Timor-Leste is a developing country and some amenities may be limited compared to the United States, most Fulbrighters find the experience deeply fulfilling, both professionally and personally. Flexibility, patience, and a willingness to adapt will help you make the most of your time in Timor-Leste.
